Settling up in HiBill is recording that money actually moved. The app never moves money itself — it is a memory tool, not a wallet.
Recording a settlement
Open the person and choose to settle up, or add a Transfer directly. Either way you are recording the same thing: money went from one person to one person.
Enter the amount and currency, and save. The balance moves.
There is no separate settlement object with its own status — settling up is just a transfer. It sits in the timeline next to everything else.
Record it when it happens
Log the transfer when the money leaves your hand — cash handed over, bank transfer sent. Not when it clears.
HiBill has no connection to your bank and cannot detect payments. If nobody records it, the balance stays where it was.
Partial settlements
You do not have to clear a balance completely. Owe €80, pay €30, and the balance reads €50.
There is nothing special about a payment that happens to bring the balance to zero — it just lands on zero.
Settling several currencies
Each currency settles separately, because balances never mix currencies. Either send one transfer per currency, or agree a single figure between yourselves and record what you agreed.
Payment reminders
When someone owes you and has not paid, you can send a reminder from their person screen or from the balance list. They get a notification.
One reminder per person per 24 hours. The limit is deliberate — a reminder you can send repeatedly stops being a reminder and becomes harassment, and the point of this app is to keep money from damaging friendships.
If you have already sent today's, you wait, or you talk to them like a person.
What the reminder says
That you are reminding them about what is outstanding between you. It does not include a payment link or move any money — the point is the nudge; the payment happens however you two normally settle.
When not to use it
Reminders suit a forgotten balance. For an amount someone disputes, a comment on the transaction is better — it puts the discussion next to the number in question.
After settling
The history stays. A settled balance reads Settled up with every transaction still in the timeline, so you can scroll back through a two-person ledger squared off many times over.
